Coping with Christmas

Christmas is a cherished time of year, filled with festive traditions, gatherings, and a spirit of goodwill.  However, most of this can easily be forgotten as expectations run high, diaries become packed with activities, family tensions can escalate and that’s before thinking about presents!

Prioritise and Plan

One of the keys to managing Christmas stress is effective planning. Start by prioritizing the activities and traditions that truly matter to you and your family and keep these in mind when creating your plan.  Try to focus on what brings the most joy and focus your energy.  Start a to-do list to help you stay organised and ensure you have enough time for everything without feeling overwhelmed.

Set Realistic Expectations

It’s easy to get caught up in the idyllic images of a perfect Christmas, but it’s important to set realistic expectations. Remember that the holiday season doesn’t have to be flawless or extravagant to be enjoyable. Keep it simple and rather than striving for perfection. Allow yourself and others the space to relax and simply enjoy the festivities.

Manage your social life

The holiday season often brings numerous social obligations, from parties and family gatherings to community events. While it can be exciting to attend everything, it’s essential to set boundaries and manage your social calendar wisely.  Prioritise the events that hold the most significance for you and your loved ones, and don’t be afraid to politely decline invitations if they are causing undue stress.

Self-Care

Amidst the hustle and bustle, self-care becomes even more critical. Take time for yourself to recharge and rejuvenate. Take time to do things that bring you joy and relaxation, such as taking a walk, reading, or practicing mindfulness. Prioritize proper sleep, exercise, and nourishing meals to support your physical and mental well-being. Remember, taking care of yourself means you can care and have time for others.

Simplify Gift Giving

Christmas gift giving can be a significant source of stress. Consider simplifying the process by setting a budget, making a list in advance, and focusing on thoughtful and meaningful presents rather than extravagant ones.   Create an interactive online gift list for the family so that everyone can say what they would really like.  Embrace alternative gift-giving options like homemade gifts, experiences, or charitable donations. Remember, it’s the sentiment and thought behind the gift that matters most.  We all know that small children play much more with the gift box than the gift itself!

Ask for help!

Be brave and ask for help and delegate tasks. Christmas should be a time of shared responsibilities and teamwork. Share the workload with family members or friends, whether it’s cooking, decorating, or planning activities. By seeking support and sharing the tasks, you’ll alleviate stress and create a sense of togetherness.

Embrace the Spirit of Giving

We have learnt during Lockdown that giving time unconditionally feeds our souls.  Christmas is a time for giving and spreading joy. Look for opportunities to give back to your community or contribute to charitable causes. You could volunteer at a local shelter, donate food or time to a food bank, or participate in a fundraising event. The act of giving not only helps those in need but also brings a huge sense of fulfilment and gratitude.  Perhaps reach out to an elderly or isolated neighbour.

Christmas can be fraught with stress and exhaustion but it doesn’t have to be that way.  Plan ahead, be realistic with what you can achieve, manage your social engagements and ask for help.  Afterall, Christmas is about loving and giving!
